MIA HJELTE

Mia Hjelte is a former soloist of The Royal Swedish Ballet (2006 - 2017) and Artistic Director of the touring dance company Stockholm 59North.

Mia received her dance education at The Royal Swedish Ballet School and during her senior year she started her professional career with the french youth company Europa Dance. The company performed at Theatre Chatêlet in Paris and toured all around France with works by Ohad Naharin, Jiri Kylian, Mats Ek and Mauro Bigonzetti.


Mia then joined the Vienna State Ballet, where she got her first experience of Corps the Ballet work, but when offered a contract with The Royal Swedish Ballet Mia returned to Stockholm after only one season in Vienna.


Mia stayed with The Royal Swedish Ballet for 11 years and was promoted to soloist. She performed in both the classical and contemporary repertoire, including soloist roles in Swan Lake, Nutcracker, Manon and Cinderella as well as in contemporary works by Mats Ek, Sharon Eyal, William Forsythe and Johan Inger, amongst others. Some of her highlights was to perform the lead role in the iconic ballet The Rite of Spring by Maurice Bejart and the lead role in William Forsythe’s Artifact Suite.During her time with the company, Mia toured to the US, Europe and China. Mia decided it was time to retire after performing at the Paris Opera.


In 2015 Mia Hjelte was appointed Artistic Director of the touring dance company Stockholm 59 North. A company consisting of soloists and principals of the Royal Swedish Ballet. As Artistic Director, Mia produced full length evenings and collaborated with filmmakers, artists, photographers, designers and composers to create new artistic collaborations, and showed ballet and new emerging choreographers outside the traditional theatre space. 2018 Mia Hjelte moved to Los Angeles and started teaching and developing ballet programs at local dance studios. Mia also frequently works with Cal-State University to choreograph musical productions.
